Despite the intrusions of the modern age, Dorset remains essentially rural. From the deep valleys and woodlands, to the high chalk downlands with their ancient ridge path, where it is possible to wander for miles with only sheep for company, to the lowland heaths where rare birds, butterflies, insects and reptiles live amongst the heather and gorse, this land is as English as anyone can imagine.
Dorset is bounded to the south by a long coastline of great beauty and variety, and it is possible to walk along its whole length following the Dorset Coast Path, part of the longer South West Way, from the fossil cliffs of Lyme Regis to the vast expanse of Poole Harbour.
